Becoming a Powerful Advocate

Determined2Heal Tips:

  • The Five Main Factors
    • Passion - advocating something that inspires you
    • Dedication - never quitting until the end result is reached
    • Education - in order to take your advocacy seriously, you must become as knowledgeable as possible
    • Strategy Oriented - learning how to take the straighter line to change
    • Teamwork - fellow advocates working together with an united goal in mind

Determined2heal's Straighter Line Analogy

The key to becoming a powerful and effective advocate is to utilize your valuable time in the right areas and directions.  I found that I have so many different passionate ideas and goals that I want to pursue but in order to be successful as an advocate it is essential to concentrate only in a few focused areas.  After you figure out what area you want to pursue, you need to map out a plan, like a timeline from the start to the finish.  Try to map out the steps it takes to get to the eventual goal.  After you develop a solid timeline, add the obstacles and barriers that would prevent you get to the next step.

Understanding which level of the government regulates your particular issue.  Ask the question, what level of the government does my issue concern?

  • Federal Government

  • State Government

  • Local Government

This is a major barrier to conquer.  If you spend all of your time pursuing your issue with a specific sector of the government that in the end can't make any changes, then you're spending and wasting a lot of valuable time.

Work with other small, medium, or large advocacy groups.  This is the most effective way when it comes to moving in the right direction.  Advocacy groups are great when it comes to focusing and accomplishing goals.  The easiest way to find resources and effective advocacy groups is on the Internet.  Spend some time searching the Internet to learn about other people that share your concerns.

Call or e-mail your local District Congressman's office and share your concern and ask what steps are needed to pursuing this issue effectively.
