Choosing the Right Wheelchair

Determined2heal Tips: (Read through this whole section and click on the different links before purchasing a wheelchair)
  • Learn how to ask the right questions

    • What is my functional ability?

      • Sip and Puff

      • Head Controls

      • Hand Controls

      • Power Assist Wheels

      • Manual Pushing

    • What are my daily activities?

      • Home

      • Office

      • Recreational Activities

      • School

      • Kitchen

      • Bathroom

      • Independence in your town or city

    • How tall am I going to be sitting in the wheelchair?

      • Very important when it comes to what car you are driving/passenger.  The car that I currently have is too small and my head touches the ceiling.  I have to tilt my wheelchair forward to even get in the car.

    • What features on the wheelchair can help prevent health related issues?

      • The Tilt and Recline Function

      • Standup Wheelchairs

    • How much money do I have to spend?

    • How much of the wheelchair cost is covered by insurance?

  • Functional ability and health issues should determine what type of wheelchair is best for you

  • Don't be afraid to ask other families with disabilities in your town which companies they use and ask them if they're satisfied. The company I currently use has brought me one headache after another, it takes 20 calls to even get in contact with the right person.  And even when I get in contact with that right person it takes them forever to resolve my problems. Some companies have better customer service than others.  I recommend companies with great customer service.

  • I always believe the simpler you keep your technologies the less likely they are to break down.

Informational web sites regarding wheelchairs

Choosing the Right Wheelchair (this is a great informational wheelchair site)

"The following is drawn from 12 months of comprehensive research, firsthand testing, detailed observation, and personal interviews with users of more than 18 brands and 15 models of power wheelchairs by Mark Felling."

Power Wheelchair Guide

This site is dedicated specifically to power wheelchair.  It provides commentary and analysis on all the new models and gives the reader their impression of the product.  It also assesses the value of each chair and the accessories that go along with them.  This is a must see for anyone who is interested in purchasing and comparing power wheelchairs.
