A passionate and dedicated advocate is a powerful tool for change

Disability Advocacy

Determined2Heal Tips:

  • Don't be afraid to become an advocate

  • If something is bothering you, speak up

  • Joining up with small or large advocacy groups is the best way to get things changed.  Small and large advocacy groups truly go the distance when it comes to change

  • Join together with others this creates the most powerful team

According to the National Organization on Disability, there are 54 million Americans with disabilities. Some people are born with disabilities and others become disabled through disease or injury. We are faced with challenges that make participating in daily able-bodied community life difficult. Although there is much legislation protecting our rights, it is often discouraging once our goals are reached to continually face the negative stereotypes society places on the disability community.

We need to have a greater understanding of each person’s abilities, and celebrate the contribution that all of us can make to our world. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which has given us a lot more accessibility and opportunities to pursuing an active life. There is, however, much work to be done to promote understanding of our need to be included as a productive part of our communities.

The National Coalition for Disability Rights is an alliance of hundreds of disability, civil rights, and social justice organizations united to defend and promote the American with Disabilities Act and the human rights of children and adults with physical, mental, cognitive and developmental disabilities.

The Disability Advocates of America is a profit organization that is nationally based that passionately fights the Social Security system to maximize benefits for and individuals specific disability case.
